Abstract

Diesel generator sets (gensets) are critical assets in various maritime industries, providing backup power onboard ships. The performance and lifespan of a genset are highly dependent on the quality and effectiveness of its lubrication system. Suboptimal lubrication can lead to increased friction, component wear (especially pistons, piston rings, and bearings), increased operating temperatures, and accelerated degradation of the lubricating oil, ultimately reducing efficiency and increasing operational costs. This research aims to identify and implement lubrication optimization strategies for diesel generator sets to achieve improved fuel efficiency, extended lubricating oil life, and reduced component wear. Optimizing the lubrication system of diesel generator sets through a combination of superior lubricant selection, advanced filtration, and condition- based monitoring is key to achieving more efficient and sustainable operation. This strategy has been shown to improve thermal efficiency, minimize wear, and maximize service intervals, collectively resulting in substantial operational cost savings.
