Abstract
Indonesia as an archipelagic nation relies heavily on maritime transportation, requiring ship machinery to be in prime and seaworthy condition. However, a serious issue occurred on KN. PRAJAPATI involving the breakage of the fresh water cooling pump shaft, leading to drastic engine overheating and threatening ship operations. This study aims to identify the causes of damage, determine effective handling steps, and formulate preventive measures to ensure similar disturbances do not recur and to maintain engine temperature stability. The writing method used is descriptive qualitative by conducting field observations, while data collection is carried out through direct observation of the cooling system, in-depth interviews with the Head of the Engine Room and the Machinist, documentation, and literature studies. The results indicate that the primary causes of shaft breakage were a combination of wear, material fatigue, and lack of detailed maintenance, which were addressed through emergency bypass activation and a systematic overhaul process. In final conclusion, the author emphasizes that preventing pump shaft damage must be achieved through the optimization of a disciplined Preventive Maintenance System (PMS) and the use of high-quality materials such as 17-4 PH stainless steel to enhance component durability. Keywords: Shaft Pump, Cooling System, Main Engine, Preventive Maintenance.
