Abstract
Low carbon steel is the most widely used steel as a shipbuilding material. The corrosion rate is the speed of propagation or decline in material quality over time. The purpose of this study was to determine the corrosion rate of SS400 Steel, to find out the difference in corrosion rate in seawater. The method used is the weight loss method or weight loss. In this study, the material used is low carbon steel. The corrosion process is carried out by immersing the test material in a seawater solution environment. The duration of the immersion process is carried out for 1 month to 2 months of immersion. The purpose of this study was to determine the corrosion that occurs in SS400 carbon steel material. Weight loss due to corrosion is closely related to time, in other words, the increasing immersion time, the greater the weight loss that occurs. The results of the calculation of SS400 steel corrosion with seawater with immersion for 1 month to 2 months are 0.0254532 mmpy to 0.0691016 mmpy. Immersion in seawater for 1 to 2 months resulted in a corrosion rate of 0.0254532 mmpy to 0.0000318 mmpy. The conclusion is that the corrosion rate after immersion for 1 month is lower than after immersion for 2 months. Keywords: Carbon Steel, SS400, Corrosion Rate, Weight Loss method
