Abstract

This study examines the relationship between the load factor (LF) and the stability of Ro-Ro vessels in relation to operational safety at Tanjung Perak Port, Surabaya. The data were collected from Ro-Ro vessels operated by PT Dharma Lautan Utama during the period of March to June 2025. The analysis was carried out by calculating the passenger load factor, vehicle load factor, and the ship’s stability represented by the metacentric height (GM) value. The results show that the highest passenger load factor reached 83% and the highest vehicle load factor was 68%, while the lowest values were 56% respectively. In terms of stability, the highest GM value was recorded in April at 5.16 m, while the lowest was in June at 2.01 m. Overall, the GM values remained above the minimum stability standard, which indicates that the vessels were stable despite variations in load factor. The analysis also revealed a correlation showing that as the load factor increases, proper cargo distribution becomes essential to prevent a decrease in GM. Therefore, it can be concluded that Ro-Ro vessel stability is significantly influenced by load factor variations, and optimal loading arrangements are crucial to ensure operational safety at Tanjung Perak Port.
