Abstract
Indonesia, as a maritime country, requires a reliable fleet of ships to support the mobility of load. One of the vital components in the main engine system of a ship is the injector, which functions to spray fuel into the combustion chamber with specific pressure and patterns to ensure optimal combustion processes. The SPOB Seroja X vessel has experienced a decline in engine performance, characterized by excessive fuel consumption and increased exhaust emissions, which is strongly suspected to be caused by damage or malfunctioning of the injector. The purpose of this observation is to understand the maintenance methods for injectors and to identify common damages that occur in the main engine injectors. Regular inspection and maintenance of the injectors are crucial to restoring engine efficiency and reducing emissions. Identifying issues such as clogging, wear, or leaks can help in implementing timely corrective measures, ultimately enhancing the overall performance of the SPOB Seroja X vessel. This observation employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection methods through direct observation during sea practice (Prala), interviews with the ship's technical officers, documentation, and literature studies. The results of the observation indicate that injector maintenance on the SPOB Seroja X vessel is crucial for combustion efficiency, engine performance, and exhaust emissions. This ship uses a conventional rotary-type fuel injection pump. Maintenance is carried out periodically every 1000–1200 engine operating hours or when symptoms of performance decline, such as excessive black smoke or increased fuel consumption, are found. The main causes of injector damage are fuel contamination (dirt, water, sludge, and the impact of B30 that accelerates the formation of deposits and corrosion), mechanical wear of components (nozzle, nozzle needle), and weak or broken springs. The effectiveness of regular maintenance has proven to maintain engine efficiency, indicated by a reduction in fuel consumption of about 10–15% and a decrease in black smoke, thereby improving engine reliability and reducing operational disruptions. The conclusion of this scientific paper is that regular and timely injector maintenance can enhance combustion efficiency, stabilize engine performance, and reduce the operational costs of the ship in the long term. This maintenance also contributes to improved navigation safety and the sustainability of the ship's operations. Keywords: injector, main engine, maintenance and damage
