Abstract

The research was carried out to determine the effect of welding currents of 100A, 110A and 120A with a certain voltage on the mechanical properties of the specimen. The SMAW welding process is a material joining technique in which two or more materials are combined with an electrode as a filler metal and electric power as a heat source to melt the steel material. The material used in the research is carbon steel Steel Pipe SCH 80 Grade B. The aim of this research is to analyze the effect of welding current strength on weld defects, indications of leaks, welding quality with variations in the current used on bending test results and the microstructure of Steel Pipe SCH 80 grade B resulting from the SMAW welding process using the E7016 electrode. The results of the penetrant method NDT testing research show that the strength of the welding current has a significant impact on the defect test results and the results of the Chi-square test analysis, the p-value obtained is 0.011 which is smaller than the standard significance level of 0.05. Because p-value < 0.05. Pressure testing using ASTM E1003-13 (2020) standards, no leaks were found in the welded joints at welding current variations of 100 A, 110 A, and 120 A and the results of the Chi-Square test analysis, no significant relationship was found between welding current variations and leak symptoms in the pressure test. Bending test results on Steel Pipe SCH 80 Grade B SMAW welding using E7016 electrodes, welding with a current of 100 A showed higher defects compared to currents of 110A and 120A. The results of the Chi-Square test analysis show that the Pearson value is 1.200 with a significance of 0.549, which shows that there is no significant relationship between welding current and defects. The Pearson Chi-Square value is 0.750 with a significance of 0.687, which shows that there is no significant relationship between welding current and crack. The significance value (Asymptotic and Exact) is above 0.05, which means that the test results show that there is no significant effect of current variations on the defects and cracks that appear in the bending test results. The strength of the welding current on the microstructure of SCH 80 Grade B Steel Pipe shows a significant impact on the grain size and phase composition formed with the HAZ particle size distribution pattern of specimens 100A, 110A and 120A, with an average of 10 μm/10000 nm, 12 μm/ 12000 nm and 12 μm/12000 nm of the average surface area definition area 98063 nm^2, 118746 nm^2 and 161139 nm^2 which have high frequencies. The majority of HAZ particle diameter sizes for 100A, 110A and 120A currents are in this value range. Key words: welding current strength, SMAW, mechanical properties, steel pipe sch 80 grade B.
