Abstract
This research aims to analyze the changes in mechanical properties of ship propeller blades before and after repairs using the Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) method. The material used is brass, which is commonly applied to ship propulsion components due to its resistance to corrosion and mechanical strength. Tensile tests and hardness tests were carried out to evaluate the effect of the welding process on the strength of the material. The test results showed that SMAW welding caused a significant decrease in the maximum tensile strength (Ultimate Tensile Strength/UTS) from 317.009 MPa in the raw material to 156.973 MPa after welding, or a decrease of about 50.5%. In addition, the strain value (elongation) also decreased from 9.528% to 6.139%, indicating that the material became more brittle and less ductile after the welding process. Hardness test using Rockwell B scale (HRB) showed a decrease from 72 in the raw material to 67.5 in the HAZ area and 65 in the weld area, which when converted to Brinell Hardness Number (BHN) is equivalent to a decrease of ±12.4%. This decrease indicates a softening of the microstructure due to the heat effect during the welding process. The conclusion of this study shows that the SMAW welding process can significantly reduce the mechanical properties of ship propeller blades, especially in the weld zone and HAZ. This finding is important in considering the right repair method so as not to sacrifice the structural integrity of the ship's propulsion components. Key words: Ship propeller, brass, SMAW, Tensile test, Brinell hardness test, HAZ
