Abstract

The intake and exhaust valves are important components of the main engine that function to open and close the exhaust gas channel from the cylinder combustion chamber. The main task of the exhaust gas valve is to retain the combustion gas in the cylinder chamber, ensure complete fuel combustion, and, at the right time, open the exhaust gas channel to drain the combustion residue out through the exhaust channel. The role of this valve is very vital for engine performance, because the timing and condition affect the efficiency of combustion and the resulting emissions. There are several problems with the valve, one of which is high exhaust gas temperature. The main cause is a leak in the exhaust gas valve system. When a leak occurs, heat that should remain trapped in the combustion chamber can escape, causing the exhaust gas temperature to increase beyond the normal limits that can be accepted by the engine. This can cause damage to the exhaust gas valve and other components. Damage that often occurs due to high exhaust gas temperatures includes valve wear, decreased sealing performance, and deformation of the valve material that can cause more severe leaks. The data collection methods used by the author include documentation, observation, interviews, and bibliography. The results obtained from this analysis indicate that the role and maintenance of intake valves and exhaust valves on ship engines are very important in the ship's exhaust system, because the processes that occur in the exhaust valve help to increase engine efficiency and ensure that the exhaust gas released is in accordance with established emission standards and maintains engine pressure and temperature to remain normal. The conclusion of this scientific paper is to improve valve performance and maintenance, such as scheduled maintenance, use of genuine spare parts, technician training, and monitoring engine conditions. The goal is to increase engine efficiency, reduce maintenance costs, and minimize negative impacts on the environment. Keywords:intake valve, exhaust valve, damage, maintenance
