Abstract
An intercooler is a mechanical device that is used to cool air. The intercooler increases the efficiency of the induction system by reducing the heat induction of air created by the turbocharger and increasing combustion more thoroughly. The purpose of this paper is to find out how the maintenance system for the dirty intercooler in the main engine This intercooler also functions as a combustion engine in order to obtain energy that is able to move the ship. Sources of data were obtained from the interview method and also observations when carrying out land practice. Primary data was obtained from informants directly by interview. Secondary data was obtained not by interview but by collecting pre-existing data. In this paper, the author explained how to properly care for the intercooler. The author collects data by means of observations, interviews, literature, and also documentation. The main cause of decreased performance of the intercooler is dirty air grating on the intercooler. The amount of dirt that settles in the pipes. These maintenance tasks are carried out to minimize the occurrence of problems that will arise when the main engine is running. The factors causing the intercooler to be suboptimal are clogged intercooler cooling pipes, dirty intercooler fins, and damage to the intercooler body packing. While the maintenance efforts are to clean the intercooler cooling pipes using rattan, clean the intercooler fins using chemicals, and replace damaged packing with new ones, it is suggested to maintain the intercooler regularly and periodically so that it is not dirty and the main engine performance is better.
