Abstract

The maintenance of fire extinguishing equipment is a crucial component of the safety system on board ships, particularly on search and rescue vessels such as KN SAR 249 Permadi, which operates under emergency and high-risk conditions. This paper aims to examine the maintenance system of fire extinguishers implemented on KN SAR 249 Permadi to minimize the risk of fire and enhance crew preparedness. The data collection method used in this study is qualitative.Observations indicate that the vessel is equipped with various types of fire extinguishing equipment, such as portable fire extinguishers (APAR), fire hoses, hydrant systems, fixed fire extinguishing systems (APAT), and fire blankets, strategically placed at fire-prone points. Maintenance procedures are carried out regularly, referring to international standards such as SOLAS and IMO guideline MSC.1/Circ.1432, including daily, monthly, and annual inspections, as well as testing and crew training. However, the effectiveness of maintenance is still hampered by several obstacles, such as the limited number of trained personnel, crew rotation, lack of spare parts, and insufficient fire drill simulations. To overcome these issues, internal training, the use of a training matrix, and scheduled simulations are implemented. With a structured maintenance system and enhanced crew competency, the fire extinguishing system on KN SAR 249 Permadi is expected to function optimally and serve as the frontline defense in dealing with potential fires during humanitarian missions.
