Abstract

Ship maintenance and repair are very important, one of which is rudder maintenance, so that the ship can operate effectively to transport people and goods from one port to another. The ship's rudder must always run smoothly and last a long time even in bad terrain and weather conditions, to support the success of ship operations, effective handling is needed in carrying out maintenance so that the ship can operate smoothly as expected. In other words, rudder maintenance is an important factor in supporting the performance and success of operations. The method used is the primary method including direct observation, and ship interviews with docking crews and technicians, and secondary methods include literature or library studies, journals, and previously existing articles. The results of the study showed that the cause of damage to the ship's rudder was, the rudder was affected by fouling, and corrosion. How to check for damage to the ship's rudder by docking or during periodic maintenance checks on the ship's rudder, if the ship's rudder is damaged, the ship's rudder must be repaired immediately so as not to interfere with the shipping process. periodic maintenance of the rudder research shows that routine maintenance can reduce the risk of sudden damage, reduce long- term repair costs, improve the safety and operational efficiency of the ship.
