Abstract

The windlass, as an anchor machine, plays a crucial role in anchoring and heaving operations, as well as in maintaining the ship’s position while at anchor. This system operates using hydraulic power, which requires high pressure and system stability to function optimally. The main problems identified include pipe connection leaks, worn O-ring components, reduced oil pressure, and hydraulic fluid contamination due to a lack of regular maintenance. Observations indicate that damage is caused by human error during operation, limited routine inspections, use of non-standard components, and neglect of oil and filter replacement schedules. Windlass maintenance is carried out in stages daily (oil and leak inspection), weekly (checking connections and gaskets), monthly (oil quality testing), and annually (system disassembly for thorough inspection). Repair efforts include replacing O-rings, cleaning filters, draining and refilling hydraulic oil, and conducting system pressure tests. Based on the discussion, it can be concluded that the windlass plays a vital role in ship operations, particularly in anchoring systems. Damage can result from gear wear, cooling system failure, pipe leakage, and malfunctioning brakes. Therefore, regular and comprehensive maintenance is essential to keep the windlass in good working condition. Timely and proper repairs can prevent more severe damage and ensure the equipment is ready for use at any time. With routine checks and maintenance, the lifespan of the windlass can be extended, and operational costs can be minimized. Keywords: Windlass, Hydraulic System, Preventive Maintenance, Repair
