Abstract

The piston is an important component in the generator engine, in compression which produces gas force which then causes the work of the auxiliary engine. The piston has a closed side and has a transverse hole in the middle which functions as a place to insert the pin. In addition, on the upper side there is a groove that acts as a place for the piston ring. The main function of the piston ring is to prevent gas leakage in the area between the piston and the cylinder. Damage to the piston affects the performance of the auxiliary engine. The piston ring is a component of the piston that plays an important role in carrying out the cycle, especially in the compression process. So the auxiliary engine requires extra power and requires high rpm which has an impact on fuel consumption which becomes more and the temperature of the exhaust gas increases than when the compression is in normal conditions, therefore an overhaul is carried out to replace the weak piston ring in order to restore power to the condition when the compression is still normal. Damage to the piston ring results in a decrease in ship speed because the increase in combustion scavenge temperature is not optimal because the leak that occurs causes compression and combustion results are not optimal. Efforts that can be made to prevent damage to the piston ring are by carrying out scheduled checks and replacing the piston and its components, including the piston ring.
