Abstract

The rapid development of technology in recent decades has affected various sectors, including the maritime industry. One significant impact of this development is the modernization of navigation tools. Historically, sailors used natural objects such as the position of the sun, moon, stars, and other natural signs as guides in determining the direction of their voyages. However, this method had many limitations, especially in bad weather conditions or when the sky was overcast. Traditional navigation tools such as the compass, sextant, and manual charts were used to determine the direction and position of ships. With technological advancements, these tools have gradually been replaced by modern satellite-based navigation systems. Some of the most commonly used modern navigation tools in the maritime industry today include the Global Positioning System (GPS), Automatic Identification System (AIS), Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS), and digital radar. In this paper, the author uses a qualitative method to analyze and provide an in-depth description of the impact of modern navigation tools on efficiency and safety at sea. The benefits of this study, which examines the influence of navigation modernization on maritime effiency and safety on board KN-JEMBIO P215, include assisting ships in navigation, helping them avoid hazards, reducing operational costs, improving efficiency and safety, and providing accurate information on speed, position, and surrounding conditions. This data can help sailors make better decisions and reduce the risk of accidents at sea. Increasing the Use and Maintenance of Navigation Tool Ship operators and crew must ensure the optimal use of modern navigation tools by conducting regular maintenance to keep them functioning properly and minimize potential technical disruptions during voyages.Training and Human Resource Development Regular training is essential for crew members in using modern navigation tools such as GPS, AIS, radar, and ECDIS. This will enable them to understand and utilize these technologies effectively, enhancing both safety and operational efficiency in the maritime industry.
