Abstract

PT Dok Pantai Lamongan is one of Indonesia’s leading shipyards, playing a crucial role in the maritime industry. The company specializes in ship maintenance, repair, and construction, making it essential to ensure vessels remain in optimal condition. One of the biggest challenges faced is hull corrosion, which can cause structural damage, reduce operational efficiency, and increase maintenance and repair costs. Therefore, optimizing hull maintenance strategies is a crucial step in enhancing the competitiveness of the national shipping industry. This study aims to analyze the primary causes of corrosion and identify the most effective maintenance and optimization methods to prevent structural damage to ships at PT Dok Pantai Lamongan. The research methods include direct observation, interviews with experts, documentation, and literature studies. The findings indicate that corrosion is caused by seawater exposure, electrochemical reactions, biofouling, mechanical abrasion, and a lack of regular maintenance. To prevent corrosion, the applied maintenance methods include manual hull cleaning every three to four months, water blasting at a pressure of 2,500–3,500 psi, sandblasting with a cleanliness standard of Sa 2.5 – Sa 3, and anti-corrosion coating application using epoxy and antifouling paint with an optimal thickness of 200–300 micrometers. Additionally, the cathodic protection system, utilizing sacrificial anodes and ICCP, periodic inspections every six months, ballast water management following IMO regulations, and docking every 2.5–5 years, has proven effective in extending the ship’s service life and reducing operational costs. By implementing this optimization strategy, PT Dok Pantai Lamongan can improve ship maintenance efficiency, minimize structural damage due to corrosion, and enhance competitiveness in the maritime industry.
