Abstract
Echo sounder is a very important navigation device in ship’s operation, its function is to measure sea depth by utilizing sound waves reflected from the seabed. With accurate information about depth, ship crews can avoid collisions with the seabed and identify other potential dangers such as rocks or reefs. Effective use of echo sounders can help in making the right decisions during ship’s operation, thereby reducing the risk of accidents at sea. In addition, the echo sounder can also detect obstacles below the surface of the air, which allows the ship’s crew vessel to take preventive measures, such as turning the course, to avoid a collision that could have fatal consequences. Based on the author’s experience during land practice at KN. Karimun Java, the write found that the echo sounder has functioned effectively as a shipping navigation tool. However, it is important to ensure that the tool meets Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulatory standards and increase knowledge in operate echo sounders so that this tool can be used optimally. This research aims to analyze the role of echo sounders in improving navigation safety and identify the obstacles faced in its use in KN. Karimun Java. This research uses a qualitative descriptive approach to analyze data obtained from direct observation during practice in the ship. Quantitative data is also used to support and explain analytical phenomena. This research also aims to provide recommendations for improving shipping safety by optimally utilizing echo sounder technology. Keywords: Echo sounder, shipping safety, SOLAS, role, constraint.
