Abstract

Differences in the accuracy of weather forecasts issued by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) compared to observational data from ships operating in the Tanjung Emas Port area of Semarang. The accuracy of weather forecasts is crucial for the safety and efficiency of navigation, considering that weather changes can significantly impact ship navigation. Therefore, in this scientific study, the researcher directly examines the comparison of the accuracy of BMKG's weather forecasts and ship observations to determine their reliability in supporting maritime operations. Data for this research were obtained during a land-based internship at the BMKG Maritime Meteorology Station in Tanjung Emas Semarang and through literature studies related to maritime weather forecasting. Based on the aforementioned phenomenon, several research questions arise, 1) How does the accuracy of BMKG's weather forecasts compare to ship observation data, 2) What factors contribute to the differences in forecast accuracy between BMKG and ship observations, 3) What steps can be taken to improve weather forecast accuracy to support maritime safety. This study employs a descriptive qualitative methodology with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and document studies. The results of data analysis indicate that, 1) Differences in the accuracy of BMKG's weather forecasts and ship observations are influenced by factors such as measurement location, frequency of data updates, and the type and sensitivity of instruments used, 2) Efforts to improve forecast accuracy can be made through optimizing BMKG's weather modeling systems, enhancing collaboration with ships in providing weather observation data, and utilizing more advanced technology in maritime meteorological analysis, 3) By improving weather forecast accuracy, maritime safety and efficiency in the Tanjung Emas Port area of Semarang can be better ensured, and the risk of accidents due to adverse weather conditions can be minimized.
