Abstract
When a ship is operating to carry cargo from port to port, Port to Port, whether solid goods, liquids, gas or passengers, requires a main propulsion engine or what is usually called a Main Engine. The working process in the Main Engine requires a Starter Battery or what can be called a main engine starter battery. The starter battery is used to start the engine. The purpose of the starter battery is to start the main engine on the ship. Starter batteries are also known as cranking batteries which provide high current in a very short time. The role of the main engine starter battery as a source of electrical power to meet the daily electrical energy consumption requirements on the ship does not rule out the possibility that small to large problems will occur with the starter battery. The purpose of this writing aims to find out how to find out about maintenance, the form of damage produced and the causes of damage to the starter battery. The author took up writing using qualitative and quantitative methods, while collecting data using documentation, interviews, literature study, observation and also documentation methods. The causes of damage to the main engine starter battery are various factors ranging from corrosion, overheating, dead battery, short circuit, to swelling. The results obtained are that the maintenance system for the main engine starter battery includes various forms of maintenance, especially on the part of the power line that will be connected to the ship's engine. Forms of battery maintenance include checking the condition of the battery, installing the battery when it is to be used, removing dirt stuck to the starter battery. The conclusion from the results of this paper is that it is recommended to always check and maintain and maintain the condition of the starter battery using procedures determined by the company so that it can be used for a long period of time.
