Abstract
An intercooler is a machine that cools the air. Intercoolers increase the efficiency of the induction system by reducing the heat induction of the turbocharger air and improving combustion more thoroughly. The air coming out of the intercooler is also burned in the engine to produce power that can move the ship. Data sources come from observations during land practice and interviews. Primary data is obtained directly from informants through interviews, while secondary data is obtained through previous data collection. The author collected data for this paper through observations, interviews, literature, and documentation. They also explained how to properly maintain the intercooler. Dirt on the intercooler air grilles is the main cause of reduced intercooler performance. A lot of dirt settles on the pipes. The author's results conducted on board the vessel showed that the intercooler was abnormal for several reasons. First, the side of the water pipe was clogged due to the large amount of sludge that had entered the seawater, some of the sludge was left in the pipe, and small lumps were in the coolant. These lumps reduce the cooling water capacity that the intercooler should be able to receive, so the intercooler should be installed in a better way to reduce the volume of sludge. 2) To solve this problem, you can check when the engine is off and clean the intercooler periodically for no more than three months. To improve the performance of the intercooler, you can also use a planned maintenance system (PMS). Keywords: Main Engine, Intercooler, Maintance
