Abstract

Inert Gas System is to maintain low oxygen levels in the tank so that it is not possible to cause fire. Purging on empty charge tanks with the intention of replacing a mixture of hydrocarbon gas with Inert Gas in order to reduce the concentration or content of hydrocarbons below the line called "Critical dilution". The writing of this paper aims to find out how the Inert Gas System operates, the causes of Inert Gas System failure, and how to optimize the Inert Gas System to prevent explosions on tankers. This research uses a descriptive method with a qualitative type of content approach. How to collect data through observation methods, interview methods, and documentation methods. The results showed that the process of implementing the Inert Gas System on the MT. SC ALIA XVII has been running well in accordance with the manual book, this can reduce the risks generated during loading and unloading operations, namely fire, explosion and damage to cargo. If fresh air sneaks into the tank, the atmospheric conditions in the tank will immediately enter the bag where this mixture can burn or explode. Keywords: Prevention, Explosion, Inert Gas System
