Abstract

With the increasing development of science and technology as well as improvements in the economic sector, many of which are influenced by developments in the shipping sector, many companies use sea transportation services in their efforts to meet the company's needs. Turbochargers were originally known as turbosuperchargers when all forced induction devices used were classified as superchargers. The purpose of this research is to determine the causes of damage and understand maintenance and repair of Turbochargers in KN. Edam Class 1 Navigation District Tanjung Priok. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method by conducting analysis based on direct data collection during carrying out land practices (prada) on board the KN ship. EDAM regarding Turbocharger problems. During land practice (Prada), the author observed several problems with the Turbocharger (in Edam, 2017). Based on research results, one of the problems with turbochargers is that abnormal sounds (bearings squeak) are often heard as a result of wear and tear on the turbocharger bearings and shafts, the turbocharger rotation is not optimal, the turbocharger shaft is broken, the lubricating oil becomes cloudy. Bearing maintenance is very necessary to maintain the performance of the turbocharger. stay at maximum. This maintenance is carried out by always checking regularly and lubricating the bearings using SAE 10 lubricating oil, usually done every 250 working hours. After carrying out regular maintenance and repairs on the turbocharger, the performance of the turbocharger will run optimally, so that combustion in the main engine will run perfectly, fuel consumption will be more efficient, and the life of the turbocharger and main engine components will last longer.
