Abstract

The propeller is an element of a ship's engine that greatly influences the speed of a ship. Damage or wear of the propeller shaft is usually caused by rotation and friction and other causes which over time result in bearing wear. If the machine is used continuously it will result in a decrease in machine performance which can result in bearing damage. There are several things that can overcome damage to the propeller shaft bearing, including lubrication. Lubrication to reduce or reduce wear between parts that rub against each other. Another function of the Lubrication System is to cool the engine by absorbing heat from the bearings in the cylinders and other parts that rub against each other. The purpose of this paper is to determine the factors that cause wear on the propeller shaft bearing. Maintenance and repair of propeller shaft bearings to support performance on board the KM KIRANA ship. The data collection method in this paper uses the observation method, interview method, documentation method and literature study. When repairing propeller bearings, you must be careful and thorough. There are several ways to repair and maintain propeller shaft bearings so that they do not experience wear and tear, such as the propeller shaft having to be removed. The period of opportunity for sea water lubrication is 3 years, while the period of opportunity for oil lubrication is 5 years. Apart from that, there are several results to prevent wear on the propeller bearings. Providing lubricant to the propeller shaft bearings to prevent wear and erosion of the propeller shaft bearings, preventing sudden heavy damage (breakdown), and preventing decreased rotation on the propeller shaft, increasing knowledge of the crew to educate them to have a sense of responsibility and work discipline (sense of belonging). Keywords: propeller, lubrication, repair
