Abstract
The world of marine transportation is very risk to accidents, whether caused by human factors (human error) or technical errors in transportation equipment. In the world of shipping, GMDSS equipment is a system that must be owned by commercial ships. The function and role of the global maritime distress and safety system (GMDSS) in an emergency/disaster at sea is to increase safety or minimize the occurrence of casualties and facilitate rescue efforts for ships, if an accident or emergency occurs at sea. The GMDSS practice implemented is communication containing news about emergency situations (for example: a ship is about to sink). The research method used in this research is a qualitative method, the analysis used is obtained from various data collection techniques through various data collection techniques, interviews, document analysis, focused discussions, or observations outlined in field notes (transcripts). Other forms of data are data. Qualitative, namely images obtained through photography. The position or location of the Navigation District is very close to the port of Tanjung Intan. It is hoped that this communication practice will not be heard by those at the Tanjung Intan port or ships in Cilacap waters, so that no misunderstandings occur. Use of the channel by other parties. This often causes our communication practices to be disrupted due to difficulty finding unused channels. Disruption of ship to ship communication practices and ship to coast station communication practices due to overhearing of communications made by other parties. The conclusion is the function of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) in Efforts to Support Navigation Safety at Tanjung Intan Port by the Type A Class III Navigation District of Tanjung Intan Cilacap. GMDSS ensures that ships can send emergency signals quickly and receive help immediately. Because the role of GMDSS is very important for shipping safety and makes evacuation easier in the event of danger. Keywords: GMDSS,effort, safety, navigation.
