Abstract
Very corrosive and damaging sea conditions cause the hulls of sailing ships to easily corrode or become damaged, especially the lower hulls of ships which are in direct contact with sea water on a continuous basis. Corrosion is material damage caused by the influence of the surrounding environment which can have a big impact on the life of a ship, because a rusty ship can cause leaks and make the ship brittle. Several things that can be done to prevent corrosion include: choosing materials that are corrosion resistant, using coatings and protectors that are resistant to corrosion and carrying out routine maintenance and inspections to minimize and avoid work accidents on ships. One method used to maintain or improve the condition of ships, especially the parts of the ship's hull that are affected by corrosion, is to use the sandblasting method. Sandblasting is used to create a profile on the metal surface of a ship's hull or other parts and also as a first step in ship maintenance. The sandblasting process will make the surface to be painted clean so that the painting process can be better because the paint can stick perfectly. This can make the repair results more optimal and of better quality so that the ship's hull becomes stronger to support shipping safety. There are several obstacles to the sandblasting process, including weather obstacles where if it rains the sandblasting work cannot be carried out, and sandblasting also requires quite expensive costs because painting must be done like a new building so cleaning of dirt must be really clean. Key Words: corrosive, sandblasting
