Abstract

The corrosion process in Indonesia cannot be avoided because of its tropical climate. The phenomenon of corrosion has caused enormous losses to humans, be it physically, biologically or chemically. This study aims to determine the corrosion rate of steel with quenching tempering heat treatment and steel with normalizing heat treatment in coastal environments and to determine the tensile strength of steel with quenching tempering heat treatment and steel with normalizing heat treatment in coastal environments. The data analysis technique used in this study was specimen testing. The methods that can be used are tensile test and corrosion rate test. The results showed that the tensile strength of the quenching tempering specimens was always higher every month when compared to the normalizing specimens. The tensile strength of the quenching tempering test object and the normalizing test object had the highest values of 89.73 kg/mm² and 73.61 kg/mm² respectively before being corroded. The results also showed that both specimens experienced a decrease in tensile strength every month. The test results on the corrosion rate of the quenching and tempering specimens gave lower results when compared to the normalizing treatment specimens every month. The results also showed that the quenching tempering specimens experienced an increase in the corrosion rate of 113.98%, with a corrosion rate in the first month of 88.13 mdd. As for the corrosion rate of the normalizing test object, it also increased by 102.16%, with a corrosion rate in month 1 of 105.41 mdd. Keywords: Corrosion, Quenching, Temperring
