Abstract

Abstract Currently, many constructions in the coastal environment use steel so that it is likely to experience corrosion. This study wanted to know the mechanical properties and corrosion rate of steel that received heat treatment in quenching and normalizing compared to carbon steel that received normalizing heat treatment in coastal environments for 1 month, 2 months, 3 months and 4 months. The data analysis technique used in this study was specimen testing. The test specimens used in this study were the corrosion rate test and tensile test. The results showed that the comparison of the maximum tensile strength of the specimens that were given the normalizing quenching heat treatment with the specimens that were given the normalizing heat treatment did not show significant changes. The corrosion rate of normalizing quenching specimens in the first month to the fourth month increased by 106.47%. The first month for normalizing quenching specimens, the corrosion rate was 99.10 mdd. After that in the following month it rose by 132.85 mdd, 198.05 mdd and in the fourth month 204.78 mdd. While the value of the corrosion rate of the normalizing specimen in the first month was 105.41 mdd, thereafter it increased to 159.69 mdd, 196.37 and in the fourth month it was 213.10 mdd. The corrosion rate of the normalizing specimen also experienced an increase in the corrosion rate of 102.16%. Microstructural observations showed that normalizing quenching specimens with oil cooling media had ferrite (white), bainite (grayish), pearlite (black) phases. While the microstructure of the normalizing specimen has ferrite (white) and pearlite (black) phases. Keywords: Carbon Steel, Corrosion, Quenching, Normalizing, Shore.
