Abstract

The propeller shaft is one of the elements of the ship and plays an important role as the successor to the thrust derived from the engine power that is channeled to the propeller. The author's goal is to find out the damage, causes, and maintenance of the propeller shaft. What needs to be known is that the position of the propeller shaft with the main engine must be in line, or, in other words, it must be in one axis line. From the observations that the author carried out when practicing in the field, there were many problems that occurred with the propeller shaft. Based on the data collection carried out during the Army Practice (Prada), the authors used several methods, namely observation, interviews, document study, and literature study. Unbalanced propeller shaft (unbalance) The propeller shaft must be balanced with the ship's main engine; that is, the propeller shaft and the main engine must be in line or on one axis line.If the propeller shaft is unbalanced, the propeller shaft position will be higher or lower at one point.Things that happen if there is damage to the propeller shaft can result in faster wear on the bearings. In conclusion, if the propeller shaft is regularly maintained and repaired, it will prevent damage to the propeller shaft so that there will be no problems when the ship is sailing.
