Abstract

Currently, corrosion occurs a lot because it is one of the many forms of metal degradation that can be caused by electrochemical reactions with the environment that have a direct relationship to open air. The atmospheric environment is responsible for almost all corrosion products. Usually metals are associated with open air where humidity and pollutant content can affect the corrosivity of metals. This study aims to determine the corrosion rate of steel carried out in the atmospheric environment of the city of Semarang. The method that can be used is the weight loss method. This method is a mass reduction method and a SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) testing method. The results showed that the corrosion rate of low carbon steel samples in area A (Tanjung Mas Port, Semarang) has an average value of 44,600 mmpy while area B (Highland Ungaran) has an average corrosion rate value of 24,840 mmpy. The difference in the magnitude of the corrosion rate in area A when compared to area B is caused by several factors including air temperature, humidity, and pollution in area A. The corrosion formed on the low carbon steel samples in area A is uniform corrosion and corrosion. well. While the corrosion that occurs in ordinary hollow iron samples in area B is pitting corrosion. The main constituent elements of hollow iron are iron (Fe) and carbon (C).
