Abstract
The main discussion in this paper is about how to optimize the maintenance and operation of ship safety equipment for passengers and especially for ship crew. SOLAS (Safety Of Life Sea) as the basis for the material that I wrote about safety equipment on a ship requires skill or prowess so that handling these safety equipment can be in accordance with procedures. Therefore, efforts are needed to improve skills in using safety equipment for all crew members. In this research, the authors formulate the problem that the ship's crew must know the extent to which the crew in improving the operation and maintenance of the ship's safety equipment. The research method used by the author is qualitative, with descriptive qualitative method data as a research procedure that produces descriptive data in the form of written words from people and behaviors that are observed around the environment on board the ship every day. The location and time of the research was carried out during land practice at PT. Dharma Lautan Utama Parepare branch and on board the ship operated is the KM ship. Kirana. From the results of this study life-saving equipment is very important when an emergency situation occurs on board, a person working on board is required to have skills in using lifeboats, know the tasks that are in accordance with emergency certificate procedures and every crew member knows about how to use all the tools For example, the lowering of lifeboats and the return of lifeboats, the crew must also be responsible for the tasks that have been divided into an emergency certificate. that the use or operation of lifeboat equipment is necessary for sailors and can improve shipping safety, therefore SOLAS (Safety Of Life At Sea) implements regulations that require ships to have lifeboat safety equipment for various emergencies and dangerous situations.
