Abstract

Diesel engines are the main engines of ships that must receive intensive and sustainable attention and care, so that diesel engines can operate smoothly and last for a long time. Ships as a means of sea transportation need to require timeliness for customer satisfaction, therefore ship operations should not be disrupted just because of damage to the diesel main engine. The research methodology used by the author is descriptive to describe and reduce the object under study. The method used in this research is observation method, interview method, observation method and library method. In a diesel engine, if there is mixing between the air in the cylinder and the fuel injected in the form of high-pressure mist and compression by the piston, combustion will occur which produces power. We know this working process in the hot combustion chamber because the main combustion cylinder head. Cracks in the cylinder head are caused by three factors, cracks in the main engine cylinder head include: Material fatigue factor of the cylinder head, lack of cooling in the cylinder head, occurrence of aftershocks in the cylinder head (detonation). Treatment to avoid cracks in the cylinder head is recommended to replace the cylinder head according to working hours. The maintenance working hours of the cylinder head according to the engine maintenance manual book is 5000 working hours. The result of the practice of cadets on ships is an analysis of the occurrence of cylinder head cracks, maintenance and knowing cylinder head cracks regularly and periodically according to working hours and the correct procedures according to the contents of the manual are expected to prevent cracks in the main engine cylinder heads.
