Abstract

Welding can not only be applied to joining two metal materials, but can also be used to thicken a component. Steel is a material that can be used in engineering as well as when making other metal alloys in order to obtain the desired material properties. One of the things that can be done to increase wear resistance is to increase the surface hardness of the workpiece. This research will later analyze ways that can be done to increase the hardness on the surface of low carbon steel after being heat treated for 60 minutes with variations of quenching media resulting from hardfacing using SMAW (shield metal arc welding) welding with polarity DC+ and DC-. The data analysis technique used in this study was specimen testing. The results showed that DC+ polarity obtained higher hardness in all tested specimens with a value of 418.66 VHN water quenching, 402.8 VHN oil quenching, 348 VHN non treatment when compared with DC- polarity with a value of 405.92 VHN quenching water, 374.02 VHN quenching oil and 323.38 VHN non treatment. Quenching media with water obtained the highest hardness results with a value of 405.92 VHN for DC- polarity and 418.66 VHN for DC+ polarity when compared with oil. The microstructure that can form in non-treated weld metal specimens is bainite, while in water and oil quenched weld metal specimens that can form is martensite. Keywords: Low Carbon Steel, Hardfacing, Quenching.
