Abstract

Propeller is one of the tools in the ship that functions to generate thrust on a ship. The propeller rotates with the shaft driven by the prime mover in the engine room. The most commonly used type of propeller is the type of fixed pitch propeller. The purpose of writing this paper is to find out how to repair and maintain fixed pitch propellers and find out problems with propellers. The type of data in this paper is a qualitative approach with descriptive methods and primary and secondary data sources. Data collection methods are observation, interviews, documentation and literature study. Some damage to the propeller occurs on the leaves such as: fouling, cavitation, cracks and bending. Bent and broken propeller caused by the impact of hard objects. As a result of damage to the propeller is excessive vibration on the engine, decreased speed due to less thrust generated, fuel becomes wasteful. The repair process includes marking the broken part and then grinding it and connecting it with a new plate by welding, then grinding it to even out the weld, then the propeller balancing process is the final stage in repairing the propeller. The balancing results show that the propeller blades meet the standards for sailing. Maintenance is carried out to maintain the propeller so that it can carry out production effectively and efficiently. Keywords: Propeller, Balancing, Repair
