Abstract

The machining process is a manufacturing process in which objects are formed by removing or removing some of the material from the workpiece. To support all of these things, it is necessary to know about cutting parameters, selection of cutting tool materials and machine maintenance by means of regular cleaning which is usually done after the machine is used, changing lubricating oil, and setting all handles in a neutral position. The purpose of this research is to serve as a comparison material for readers to be able to understand how to operate a lathe, especially those related to the world of shipping, know the impact and how to deal with it optimally and how to maintain a lathe so that the workmanship is in accordance with the job sheet. The methods used in this research are the observation method, the interview method, and the library method. The causes of the operation not working optimally, thus affecting the turning results and the results being out of tolerance are the selection of the material for the cutting tool, sleds that cannot move, loose heads and installation of cutting tools that are too high or low. This results in imperfect turning, because there are parts of the lathe that experience problems which result in the rotation of the workpiece in the machining process not being able to center with the chuck. These results can be concluded which can be used as a guide to find out about cutting parameters and carry out routine and well-planned maintenance so that the operation of the lathe can run optimally and produce the final product with an accurate size or according to tolerances.
