Abstract

An emergency is a situation outside the normal situation that occurs on a ship that has the potential to pose a danger to the safety of humans, property, cargo, ships and the surrounding environment. Therefore, in SOLAS 1974 chapter IV regulates "radio communication" namely the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) it is stated about guidelines regarding how to maximize GMDSS to ensure safe navigation and communication and to minimize casualties during an emergency. All officers must understand very well in using this equipment because several incidents occur due to ignorance in using this equipment. This research was conducted using a qualitative method with the aim of evaluating the implementation of the service using GMDSS equipment during the Search and Rescue (SAR) operation at KN SAR SADEWA 231 National Search And Rescue Agency Semarang in accordance with the GMDSS MANUAL. Data collection in this paper uses field research with observation methods and interview methods as well as library studies. The result of this study is a systematic understanding of communication when an emergency occurs using the GMDSS system as an effort to save lives at sea during Search and Rescue (SAR) operations.
