Abstract
Now there are various types and types of ships with various sizes. One of them is a tanker, which is a ship specifically designed to load cargo in liquid form. Tankers have their own types according to the cargo carried. The types of tankers are chemical tankers, oil tankers and gas tankers. The dangers that need to be considered on tankers are explosions and burns, so to prevent fires on oil tankers, a device called an inert gas system is made. The tool can produce a gas that aims to reduce oxygen levels in the cargo tank, which is very necessary in the combustion process. Through the inert gas system, the combustion process shown by the fire triangle can be removed, one of its components, namely reducing oxygen levels so that it can be minimized. The use of an inert gas system (IGS) for cargo on tankers is not something new. Based on the experience gained during sea practice on MT Sea Champion and from the background of the problem mentioned above, namely the function of the inert gas system to prevent explosions and fires in tanker cargo tanks that have been well inert, such as during tank washing for ballast or repair purposes, loading and unloading, In achieving this goal, it is deemed necessary to have an understanding of what is meant by an inert gas system, as well as an understanding of its operation and maintenance. With this research, it is hoped that we will know the method of operating the inert gas system and the working system of the inert gas on ships. tankers. In this study, I used several methods, namely: Observations, interviews, documents, and literature.
