Abstract
Diesel engines are the most widely used engines as a source of mechanical energy on board ships. The diesel engine is an internal combustion engine that produces motion energy and heat energy. Excessive heat in the engine causes engine damage. Coolant is a medium that serves to absorb heat. The heat is obtained from the combustion of fuel in the cylinder. The cooling system has several components that work in conjunction, including: fresh water cooler, fresh water circulation pump, sea water pump, strainer in sea water and sea chest. These four components often cause less than the maximum cooling results for the main motor. Cooling water in its function is very vital in maintaining the smooth operation of the main engine. To prevent excessive heat in the diesel engine, proper cooling is needed, one of the components that serves as engine coolant is the fresh water cooler (FWC) in the form of a heat exchanger. The failure of the FWC to cool fresh water as an engine cooling medium resulted in engine damage. FWC maintenance is an action to restore the ability of the FWC to its prime condition to cool fresh water and prevent engine failure due to engine temperature exceeding the specified limit. The cause of the lack of heat absorption in the fresh water cooler of the auxiliary motor is the blockage of the capillary pipe by dirt and mud. Overcoming a clogged capillary tube must clean the dirt and mud on the pipe. In addition, the lack of seawater capacity affects the heat absorption of the fresh water cooler. To prevent the capacity of seawater from decreasing, we look at the pressure on the seawater pump as a fresh water cooling medium. If the pressure on the cooling pump decreases while working normally, then check the seawater filter again and if there is dirt on the filter and clean it. The purpose of this study was to find out how the maintenance actions were carried out on the FWC diesel engine cooling system using the case study method on the KN ship. DAMARU P. 214, the results of the study are described descriptively. The conclusion of this study is that FWC maintenance on navigational ships has been going well, carried out according to the work instructions of the engine instructions, according to the schedule, the results of the maintenance obtained the engine temperature back as expected.
