Abstract

Ship is a mode of sea transportation that is used as the main means in shipping activities, where ships are used to transport various types of cargo from one place to another through waters, both in large and small quantities. To be able to sail on the high seas, a ship must have a clear identity, both from its ownership and legal status which is physically indicated by flying the ship's national flag. By flying the national flag, it signifies a ship has against that flag country as proof of the ship's legal status. The legal status of the ship can be determined after going through the process of measuring the ship, registering the ship, and determining the nationality of the ship. Every ship must be measured by a ship surveyor and will be approved by a government official who is authorized by the Minister. Ship registration is carried out at the ship registration port carried out by ship registration officials who have been authorized by the minister. Ships that have and already have a grosse deed can then be issued a certificate of ship's nationality to the technical operator appointed and authorized by the minister, as official evidence of the legal status of Indonesian ships. Given the importance of the legal status of ships in shipping, the authors conducted research on the legal status of ships in the Gilimanuk Class II Organizing Unit which was carried out while the authors were doing land practice there. This study discusses the meaning, function, and possibility of issuing the legal status of the ship so that it can be used as a reference by Indonesian shipping actors.
