Abstract
Sandblasting is a surface cleaning process by firing particles (sand) onto a material surface, causing friction or collision, then the surface will become clean and rough. The surface roughness of this metal will greatly affect the adhesion of the coating to the surface of metal objects. The stronger the adhesion of the coating, the stronger the protection of the coating on the metal against corrosion. Sandblasting method has been used to create an effective and efficient surface roughness profile in the surface preparation process at the PT. Ben Santosa Dockyard Surabaya. The connection in writing this paper, the author uses ASTM A36 and ASTM A53 steel, which are steel materials that are often used for ship hulls as writing material for sandblasting materials. In writing this scientific paper the author uses a descriptive method. From the observations it can be found that ASTM A36 steel will have maximum roughness if the abrasive material from the sandblasting machine uses a steel grid material, while in ASTM A53 steel the most effective abrasive material used is silica sand.
