Abstract

The main engine is the main driving force on the ship which functions to convert mechanical power into thrust with the help of the ship's propeller rotation so that it can move, where in operation the main engine is always in a continuous running condition. This of course will affect the condition of the engine. In a complex system such as an air starting system on a ship which consists of an air reservoir tank, air starting valve, distributor valve or other types, the damage that occurs varies greatly. Many factors affect the engine not turning when the pedestrian air is supplied, including internal factors, problems that occur inside the engine and external factors, problems that occur outside the engine, which hinder starting the engine. This paper aims to determine the factors that cause the main engine cannot rotate when the pedestrian air is supplied, and efforts to overcome these factors. The data collection method that the writer uses is the library and field method which includes observation and interviews. The thing that causes the main engine to not rotate when the pedestrian air is supplied is the occurrence of congestion and leaks in the air starting valve and distributor valve caused by water coming from the water reservoir tank and lack of maintenance on the pedestrian air system. From the results of the discussion of the problem, the efforts that will be made so that the main engine can rotate when the pedestrian air is supplied are to repair and maintain the air starting valve and distributor valve, do a sprinkling of the water reservoir tank to reduce the water content that enters the pedestrian air system. Regular and planned maintenance and repair will reduce the risk of damage and failure of the engine starting system when the pedestrian air is supplied.
