Abstract

Application of MARPOL 73/78 Against Pollution by Ships in the South Coast Region of Cilacap The MARPOL Convention is an international convention that covers the prevention of pollution of the marine environment by ships because of its activities and accidents. It is a combination of 2 provisions determined in 1973 and 1978, each of which is amended annually. In IMO (International Maritime Organization) which is mandated in the MARPOL 73/78 convention, that each port must have a waste reception facility (port reception facilities) in each port with the aim of reducing environmental pollution due to waste disposal from ships. Whereas in Indonesia, which has ratified the regulations of MARPOL 73/78 Annex I, II, II, III, IV, V, and VI, it does not fully comply with these regulations, namely building waste handling facilities. Oil spills in Indonesia have an impact on environmental pollution, by ship oil spills not new in Indonesia. Sea contaminated by oil spills will have a negative influence on various marine organisms, some species of water birds, coastal aquatic organisms, such as various types of fish, coral reefs and mangrove forests. In an effort to prevent pollution in the sea, each vessel must have pollution prevention equipment, including Oil Water Separator and Incinerator which is in accordance with the provisions of MARPOL 73/78.
