Abstract
An emergency is a situation outside the normal conditions that occur on a ship that has the potential to cause danger to the safety of humans, property, cargo, ships and the surrounding environment. Therefore, in SOLAS 1974 chapter IV regulates "radio communication", namely the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), it states guidelines regarding how to maximize GMDSS to ensure safe navigation and communication and to minimize casualties in the event of an emergency. All officers must understand very well in using this equipment because several incidents occurred because of ignorance in using this equipment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the implementation of service use of GMDSS equipment during the Search and Rescue (SAR) operation at KN SAR SADEWA 231 Basarnas Semarang in accordance with GMDSS MANUAL. Collecting data of this paper uses library research and field research with observation and interview methods. The results of this study are an evaluation of the understanding of communication systematics during emergencies using the GMDSS system as an effort to save lives at sea during the Search and Rescue (SAR) operation.
