Abstract

The ship's steering engine is a driving device that has a hydraulic system that uses a liquid such as oil as a means of pressure to move the ship's rudder shaft. Therefore, the steering wheel must meet the requirements required for the sake of safety and as stipulated in SOLAS 74 rule 29 Chapter II regarding the steering gear, with the aim of providing theories about the operation and maintenance of the steering engine properly and correctly. In accordance with the data collection methods, both by observation, interview and library research that the author collected, a discussion of the problem of operation and maintenance of the steering engine can be taken, so that you get the results of how the steering engine hydraulic system works and can find out the correct operating procedure for the steering engine and how to maintain the steering engine including routine maintenance, periodic maintenance, maintenance of engine components, maintenance of tanks, maintenance of filters, checking safety valves, and running test after treatment.
