Abstract
Ballast pump is one of the most important auxiliary engines in the ballast system to maintain balance and smoothen the ship. This is to determine the selection and use of effective pump types. Another purpose is to know how the operation of ballast pump, maintenance of ballast pump is very influential on the operation at when the ship sailing. This research was conducted on board of MT. FORTUNE GLORY XLI company owned by PT. EQUATOR MARITIME for twelve months. The source data obtained was primary data obtained directly from the place of research by observation and interview with the Chief Engineer (CE) along with engineers and other crew. Documents and literature related to the title of the paper was used for wrote this paper. The results obtained from this study was the use of type f pump affect the effectiveness of the work and operation of ballast pump. This consists of several steps in accordance with the operating manual, maintenance and repair of pumps is important to extend the life of wear. It is advisable to select the type of pump to be in accordance with the viscosity of the substance to be pumped, to read the operation steps of the ballast pump before operating, and to maintain maintenance according to maintenance schedule in manual book.
